WHAT IS A COUNTY COMMISSIONER?

IN A NUTSHELL: A county commissioner is the leading eyes, ears and voice for everyone in the district where you reside. They represent YOU!

Your commissioner is one of 21 individuals that make up the Rutherford County Commission – the legislative body of county government – and yes, it’s a bigger role than just “showing up to a meeting or two.” A county commissioner oversees the county’s management and administration, represents the county and its people on all fronts including the state and federal level, manages the county budget and finances, looks after critical infrastructure essentials such as public safety, property management, ethics, health and education, public works and planning and more.

A commissioner also acts as a mediator between you and other government entities within Rutherford County. If an issue or concern arises or if you have an idea that you think needs to be taken “all the way to the top,” your county commissioner is the person you will want to contact.

“HELLO, PETTUS? I HAVE A PIG ON MY PORCH AND I NEED SOMEONE TO COME AND GET IT.”

Of course, a commissioner also serves all matters of the public. From animal concerns to issues with the growing population, they are always on call and always there to meet the needs of their constituents no matter the time of the day.

“SORRY FOR CALLING SO LATE, BUT ALL OF THIS RAIN IS CAUSING ISSUES OUT HERE, AGAIN. CAN YOU COME AND TAKE A LOOK?”

That’s why it’s important to understand that for a county commissioner, it’s not just a title – IT’S A JOB – and Pettus Read is here to continue serving you FULL-TIME!
